If You Can't Sleep

If you can’t sleep
and you get up
stand by the back door smoking
and it's a clear night
thousands of stars
thousands
and a breeze blows into the kitchen
tinkles the little bells on a cord
the ones you bought from the hippy shop
a gentle ringing
and the stars

Most trees
if you can find it
have a slot
the size of a credit card

My first job
after academy
was tree programmer

I still recognise the work of my colleagues
peter12 has been to Roath Park

We didn't talk much
but we talked a lot about talking
–how people should talk more,
the best ways of talking,
who it was who stopped us from talking
and how we'd sort them out–
but it was only talk.
